Tai Chi or Qigong: Which Should Study?

Tai Chi or Qigong: Which Should Study?

Tai Chi has increased in popularity in the western world.  It often appears in the background of advertisements of unrelated products.  It is recommended for seniors and by the              American Arthritis Society, which has its own simplified version.  Many health clubs and        martial arts studios offer Tai Chi classes.
Tai Chi is a Chinese art designed to protect oneself from unarmed and armed attacks and
illnesses.  It is both a martial art and a method for preventing and treating illnesses.
Information about its history and concepts can be found in the article  "Are You Really Learning Tai Chi and Is It Effective for Stress?"  at
http://yang-sheng.com/?p=1612
Qigong, pronounced Chee Kung, is not as well-known as Tai Chi and is frequently given
as an auxiliary exercise before or after doing Tai Chi.  In Chinese "Gong" means work or
hard task.   Qi can be translated as life energy.  Qigong is the ta k of learning to control the flow of Qi through your body by using breath, movement and meditation.  It is a Chinese discipline that is at least 5000 years old.
The main divisions of modern Qigong (Chi Kung) are: Spiritual, Medical, Martial and
Athletic depending on the main goal of the practitioner. However, there is an overlap
between them.
Medical Qigong is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM postulates that
health is the result of smooth Qi circulation, without accumulation or deficiency in any part of the body, while disease is the result of poor Qi circulation. Once the flow of Qi is balanced, the body tends to heal itself.
Here Qigong will be used to denote Medical Qigong for preventing and treating
diseases and will not include Tai Chi, which is also a form of Qigong.  More information about Qigong can be found in "What is Qigong/" at
http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Eisen1.html
If you want to learn classical Tai Chi you must find a knowledgeable instructor.  Many classes only offer shortened, altered forms that are supposed to be for health purposes only.  Many of these so-called Tai Chi forms are not taught according to Tai Chi principles and are some sort of new-age dance.  You can save money and probably get the same
health benefits from slow walking and waving your arms.   Even if you find an instructor that teaches a classical long form and you want to learn self-defense, investigate if 2-person Tai Chi martial art forms are taught and not self-defense based on Karate or some other martial art.
Many health benefits have been ascribed to the practice of Tai Chi.  However, there are a few problems with these studies.  The scientist conducting these studies may not be an expert in Tai Chi and so selects an incompetent teacher for the subjects.  The form may have been altered by the instructor and so another teacher may not teach the same, exact
form in another study.  Sometimes the sample size is too small.  If the subjects
are required to practice at home some will be fanatic and others barely practice and accurate reports of practice times are difficult to obtain.  Finally, Tai Chi, even shortened versions for health, require years of study before the subject is really doing Tai Chi.  Hence, the studies should be called the effects of trying to learn Tai Chi.  More long-term studies are required to verify the beneficial effects of Tai Chi.
Clinical trials have shown that Qigong is helpful in about 200 diseases, even more
diseases than Tai Chi.  There are many different forms of Qigong.  Some are
classical and others are made-up or modified by a teacher.  The criticisms given above for Tai Chi research apply to Qigong research.

Learning Tai Chi takes self-discipline to practice daily and tenacity not to give
up.  Those who have studied arts, like dance or music, that require constant practice are more likely to succeed in learning Tai Chi.  Tai Chi requires more coordination than some forms of Qigong.  A good memory is also helpful.  Nevertheless, learning Tai Chi only for
health requires years of study.
Seniors interested in preventing or treating illnesses should consider learning Qigong
rather than Tai Chi, especially if they have memory or coordination problems.  There are health forms of Qigong that are much easier to learn.  For example, a Qigong method for losing weight can be learned in about a minute.  The hard part is to practice it before every meal.
For life threatening diseases use Qigong.  You may die before you learn Tai Chi.  Some
hospitals have drop-in Qigong classes.  Such classes are not useful for treating serious diseases.  Usually, you are not informed that you must practice for hours every day.  Find a specialist in medical Qigong who can give you a TCM type of diagnosis and construct an
individualized Qigong protocol based on the diagnosis.
Even in China, it is difficult for patients to practice Qigong for hours.  Patients join a social Qigong group or are placed in a hospital.

Muscle Building Rules For Skinny Fat People

Muscle Building Rules For Skinny Fat People

Muscle building can be really easy unless you are a skinny fat guy. You know those guys who have skinny arms and legs but have a nice little pouch for a stomach. Luckily I have spent years research why exactly certain people like me and you are skinny and fat at the same time. It really has a lot to do with your training. Most people are so dead set on training a certain way that they can not see the long term implications, which is a bigger stomach and less muscle on your arms and legs.

Skinny fat people must train with full body works and bodypart split
I get really confused when I hear about skinny fat guys doing all full body workouts or having a arm or chest day in the gym. Both of those training methods should actually be used if a skinny fat guy plans on building muscle.

The only really way that someone is going to build muscle and burn fat at the same time is to train with frequency, volume and intensity. All three of those characteristics have to be met or else the skinny fat guy will not build muscle. By doing so you can raise your metabolism as well as increase your muscular size.

For skinny fat muscle building I typically recommend two full body days and two to three body part split days depending on your time.

Skinny fat people must do both high intensity and slow steady cardio
The recent trend by many experts is to recommend nothing but high intensity interval cardio. This is good advice but most experts do not know anything about how to train a skinny fat guy. After all, I am not the number 1 expert on skinny-fat muscle building in the world for nothing.

You see both high intensity and slow and steady cardio have advantages. For a skinny fat guy, high intensity cardio will help burn the excessive calories that are floating around and go right to your stomach. Slow cardio on the other hand will help him burn fat when you do not want to risk the chance of burning muscle tissue.

Skinny fat people must perform more leg work
I know that everyone hates it but leg work is a must for skinny fat guys. Leg work increased the amount of testosterone, the most powerful muscle building hormone that we have. The problem with skinny fat guys is that they have low amounts of testosterone. This is one of the main reasons that they have a bulging stomach. Testosterone is linked to building muscle but in a lack of testosterone, our body will hold onto fat. The best thing that a skinny fat guy can do is squat and deadlift at least twice a week. Now do not worry, you do not have to both squat and deadlift twice a week. One day should be centered on your squat and improving that lift while the second day should be centered on building the deadlift.

Training lower body allows you to increase both your metabolism and muscle building hormones, which is the aim of skinny fat guys, which is to increase muscle building hormones and increase metabolism.

How To Get Nice Muscle Tone And Build An Attractive Muscular Body

How To Get Nice Muscle Tone And Build An  Attractive Muscular Body

Most people know that they need to lift weight build muscles. However many just want to have nice muscle tone and an attractive but not too muscular body as they do not want big muscles. So they just lift light weights with high repetitions. Well, it is not going to work. To have nice muscle tone, you will have to build some muscles right? So you will have to lift heavy to force your muscles to grow. Once you are satisfied with the size of your muscles, you will then need to cut your body fats for your muscles to show up well and that means nice muscle tone.
You need to have a solid commitment and knowledge to get nice muscle tone and build an attractive muscular body. Here are some muscle building tips. Before you commence weight training, remember to warm up and as well as doing some stretching exercises.
•Train Muscle With Free Weights
Machines will have its uses, but for a start, concentrate on free weights. That means work almost exclusively with barbells and dumb bells. Free weights recruit many stabilizing muscles for balance and control. That means you will work a lot more muscle parts other than the intended ones. That will give rise to little bumps, striations and definitions all over your body instead of one huge lump of muscle on your intended muscle. Because of the extra stimulant created, your muscles grow faster too. Why else do you think all professional body builders almost exclusively use free weights?

•Train With Compound Exercises
Incorporate as many compound exercises as possible to your routines. Compound exercises are exercises that involve 2 or more joint movements. Because they utilize more joints, which means greater muscle mass are involved. Greater muscle mass means heavier weights. Heavier weights mean encouragement of greater muscle growth. More muscle growth means more tone to your muscles.
Some excellent compound exercises are the Squat, Deadlift, Chin ups, Dips, Bench press, Barbell Press, Lunges, Bent-Over Barbell Row...etc.
•Train Intensively But Do Not Over train
You must train intensively for your muscle to grow. Try to do more reps or add more weight than the previous session or else your muscles will think (actually muscles don't think, they adapt), "Ah... we've done that. Nothing new, so no need to grow bigger and stronger." That being the case, you will wreck your chances of attaining an attractive muscular body.
Because of this, it is important that every time you train hard, you give your body time to recover as it has suffered strains and actually sustained many small scarring. Contrary to popular belief, your muscles grow when you rest, especially when you sleep and not in the gym. So sleep at least 8 hours a day. Also, do not train everyday or work the same muscle group more than once or twice a week. If your training was vigorous enough, do no more than an hour per session.
Try not to do cardio work on the same day as your weight lifting work. In fact, during the muscle building phase, you should do less cardio work as aerobic exercises burn muscles. You can increase your cardio work at cutting body fat phase, so as to lose body fat in order for your muscle tone to show up nicely.
•Technique And Form
This is the most neglected fundamental of bodybuilding. Everywhere, everyday, you will see people using wrong forms and techniques. This not only compromises your growth, it will also make you susceptible to injuries... sometimes even permanently putting you out of the gym.
Wrong form occurs usually when people try to lift weights that are too heavy, whether out of vanity or ignorance. As a guide, always lift with strict focus on the muscle you intend to build for that exercise. Feel it contract and extend. Lift the weights deliberately and slowly. Never ever swing your weights up especially when doing bicep curls or the military press.
•To Build Muscles Fast You Must Perform Lower Body Exercises!
This is what most people don't realize. Your lower body makes up 60-70% of your musculature. If you don't train them, not only will you look spider-legged, your entire body will not grow as quickly and as large. Don't think that you can hide those skinny limbs in pants! Most people do not train their legs because squats, dead lifts and lunges can be very grueling exercises. But it is precisely because of such intensity that you will produce more growth hormones when you sleep and overall muscular development is stimulated. Your body shape will also be more balanced and therefore more attractive.
Do read up more to understand how your muscles work and then work on it so that in no time you will be a proud owner of a well tone attractive muscular body.

Mind Management

                      Mind Management

Root cause of tension....
In the present world all are talking about the work pressure, tension etc which all can be avoided if we are able to understand the root cause.
If we analyze all the cases in detail that are causing this so called "tension", "pressure" etc, we alone are the culprit. But then we are taken away by the materialistic point of view & simply putting the blame on others.

Our human body is the most complex where in no one is able to understand how all the functions are synchronized with in no time. We all are gifted with decision making capabilities, but then still when it comes to critical situations at which a decision has to be taken; we try to play a safe game so to avoid criticism. The saddest part is not escaping from the game, but commenting on the action behind the scene.

We are all hung up in the head. This is the main problem & the one & only solution for that is get down from the head into the heart & all problems disappear. All the problems are created by the head. Mysteries remain but problem will disappear.
All the experiences that happen in life are like the small clouds; they come & go& are not worth paying much attention to. One should always remember that they are the sky, the clear blue infinite sky & then no clouds can distort you. Take no notice of such small clouds & they will never come uninvited.

We should be able to live our life in such a way that nobody is harmed neither by our actions nor by our words. We should live in a creative way, with skill & art. Live in a sensitive way & never become attached.
Root causes of all depressions are expectation & anxiety. The only solution is to remain detached.
The example of bee is worth mentioning here in this context.
The bee gathers honey from all kinds of flowers but it remains unattached. It will go the rose, to the marigold, to the lotus etc. It will move from flower to flower gathering honey, but it is not attached, it does not cling.
Another beauty is that, although the bee gathers honey from many flowers, it never destroys any flower. It collects what so ever it needs, but in such an artful way with such skill that the flower remains absolutely the same.

Life is never static; it is in a constant moment. So if we cling to anything, it will bring misery. When there is a beautiful sunset, let us all enjoy that, but do not cling on to it. It will soon disappear while watching itself. Then the night will fall, but let us not worry about that, the night has its own beauty. (Shining stars will decorate the sky).
So if someone has been attached to the beauty of the sunset, they will be crying because it is no longer there, & in that crying they will miss the beauty ofshining stars appearing the sky.
We all are living in a world surrounded with anger, with jealousy, with possessiveness, with ego. One should refrain from all these gross elements because all these are destroying so much energy, wasting many good opportunities. All these energies should be transformed into good actions by helping others & serving the society there by adding more joy leading into peace.

There is a systematic process which is ongoing in whatever actions we perform.

Step 1- Creating a feeling:-
This is the basic step & naturally all the actions that are following us are because we have creating a feeling towards the object in the very first glance. That is why the famous statement "First impression is the best impression" holds always true at all times. But then there will be lots of questions in all your mind that will be against this logic.  Let's wait & see……..

For example:-
When one person appears for the interview, & if he is directed neatly from the front desk, he automatically creates a feeling in his mind that this place will provide a good working atmosphere. But then in reality it might not be appealing to all. Still if the mind has created a positive feeling in the first moment it will really help to perform well in the interview too.
Another example:-
When i see a flower in the garden, i am creating a feeling that this is the most beautiful flower & is adding value to the garden as such. This feeling is re-emphasized many times & our mind accepts that feeling. Even there can be situations that this plant might be in the garden from a very long time; still we might not have noticed the same. But once the mind creates a feeling it will strongly keep on hold.
Step 2 – Thought:-
Once our mind accepts that feeling, it encourages us to think more. We will start to compare the color, look, appeal, fragrance etc of the flower with other & re-assures that this is the best flower in the entire lot. This thought strengthens the idea that this is the most beautiful flower. Even this is very much applicable at all our daily life.
We might be planning to buy some clothes for birthday & we will create a feeling that, I should buy both cool denim and a sexy check shirt. Now even in the statement itself how can I state that denim is cool and check shirt is sexy? Because I have created a feeling in my mind that this will be the best & is in fashion. Now this thought will be literally bothering me all the time & i will be thinking as to from which store I should purchase? Which brand will be better? How good I will be in that and all.
Whatever matter you take all these plays the same role. It can be anything starting from setting a wakeup call in the morning to choosing your better half.
Step 3- Attitude
This thought really shapes our attitude towards that object or the idea that we have already conceptualized. We always feel & compare whatever we see & feel with that of the idea which has been framed in our mind.

Step 4- Habits
These attitudes will be clearly reflected in our habits. This can be better explained with an example.
Example:-
If a person has created a feeling in his mind that alcohol consumption will help him/her to relieve from all his tensions, then that feeling will create a thought in his mind that drinking is the only option for a stress free life. This thought will be inscribed deeply into his mind & he/she will have an attitude that all drinkers will be tension less beings. Even in the reverse dimension, all non-drinkers will have a stress full life. Even we can very often hear from many people that "Life is a waste if you are not drinking. You will not enjoy the beauty of life". If we seriously analyze that statement, does that add any value?  Such attitude frames his habit & he/she will feel that daily will be so boring if at least two pegs are not consumed.
The enjoyment that they are proclaiming is purely again a feeling that we are creating in the mind. Even if such a comfort is felt, that is purely for a short time.

Step 5- Personality
Such habits form part of our personality. The habits are not evolved suddenly; we have made up our mind so strongly that it takes a very long time to unwind the bad habits & re-learn the good ones.
This can be explained with an example (positive dimension).
Example:-
If a kid has been brought up in a family where they used to help the deserving persons, it helps the kid to have an understanding that service to mankind should be our primary duty. This will not be grasped by the kid in a day or a week's time. The parents or the elderly members will be explaining as to why they are doing such good deeds and all. During the course of time, the kid grows & in his mind a feeling might have come across that like his parents he should also help the needy with in his limit & capacity. Such a feeling will lead to thinking & he will indulge in a thought process as to how he can help the needy.  This will create a frame work & his attitude towards life will change & his mind always wishes to do good things. This clearly can be depicted from his personality. He will be approachable to all & always will have a helping mind at all times.

Conclusion:
Most of us live our lives in the world of time, in memories of the past & anticipation of the future. Only very rarely do we touch the timeless dimension of the present- in moments of sudden beauty or sudden danger, in meeting with a lover or with surprise of the unexpected.
Everybody is trying to remain a separate entity: trying to protect themselves, defend themselves. We are not separate, no man is an island. We are part of the continent, so it's baseless & useless to fight with the continent.
Let us all dissolve into the whole, drop the ego. We have to forget ourselves that we are separate, let us make ourselves a part of the whole & feel & visualize how beautiful & sweet it is.
Hell & heaven is within oneself. We can be the hell & we can be the heaven, it is always us & it is our decision. Heaven is not somewhere else; we have to create it just as we create hell. It is a psychological state. Once we release that we are the creator there is great freedom.
We are ready to travel miles & miles in search of bliss. We make ourselves ready to visit many pilgrimage & temples that are very very far off & that prayer is nothing other than a business or a trade. In that sense we all are traders. We always expect something in return. We go to the temple & pray & give donations, but in return we pray to the god to give this & that. This is nothing other than a trade. We are business minded.
The temples & sacred places are having positive vibrations & is a good place for meditation. These places will help us to uplift our mind-set to a higher level. But for that the temples will only guide us, we only have to make our mind & proceed on with the journey.
A true seeker is not after knowledge, he is after knowing. He wants to learn the very process of learning. He is not at all interested in arriving at the conclusions. He is not interested in goals. But he is very much interested in the journey as such itself.
The very idea of a goal is created by the lazy mind so that one can rest once it is achieved. The people who are interested in goals always will be interested in short cuts. A true seeker has no desire, no ambition. He will be interested in this moment, & will enjoy every now & here.
The ego is the only problem & then it creates & thousand & one problems. It creates greed, lust, anger, jealousy so-on & so forth. The people will go on fighting with greed, with anger, with lust. But it's futile. Unless the root is cut, new branches will be coming up in geometric progression.
We all have to serve the mankind without any expectation & the dissolution of the ego is the greatest revolution. If we service the needy one's now, it is pretty sure that we will get the return of all the good deeds at a later point of time. But let us not work for that with such expectation.

Why Canada Needs a National Sports Network

Why Canada Needs a National Sports Network

As many know I have been writing a variety of business related articles for some time. This is a departure but I feel compelled to say what Canadians from coast to coast have expressed over the years. As a Speaker I have been fortunate enough to visit each province in Canada at least 50 times and every state in the union as well. Business has been a passion for me but sports has always been a passion as well. Although I love most sports, like most Canadians hockey is in my blood.
I know many markets in the USA have not felt our passion for hockey but it's a great game that is our national pastime, some say obsession. Canada is a huge country that in relative terms is sparsely populated. In fact one of the largest countries in the world Canada has less than 30 million people. A large percentage of the population is inMontreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Each city has an NHL franchise with fans that have a burning passion for hockey and sports in general.
In Canada the Montreal Canadiens are hockey's most storied franchise and the most successful hockey franchise in NHL history. The Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups and only trail the New York Yankees in terms of championships. In Canada the next closest to Stanley Cup wins is the Toronto Maple leafs with 11 Stanley Cups. Toronto is Canada's largest city and the home of TSN. Although this network claims to be The Sports Network many Canadians from coast to coast refer to them as The Toronto Sports Network. Many believe as I do that although they claim to be Canada's sports network they are really a regional network focused on Toronto and not acting like a truly national sports network.
A couple of years ago I discovered sports boards on the TSN web site. I had never posted before and I soon discovered that trash talking in general was the rule of thumb. It reaches the highest levels of intensity between Canada's biggest hockey markets Toronto and Montreal. The more time I spent on the web site the more I discovered the truth which is the thrust of this writing. Sports fans from across Canada are subjected to a barrage of articles, interviews and profiles on TSN'S team the Toronto Maple Leafs. Fans are constantly bombarded with interviews and irrelevant articles focused on the Leafs. They write an article when their manager takes a jet ride. They write an article when he sits on a camel. They write articles on his personal life and on and on it goes. Then there are seemingly endless profiles on their players from every imaginable angle while other sports markets in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Montreal are treated like second class citizens. Worst still the Maple Leafs don't have a competitive team, have missed the playoffs for six years in a row and most recently an ESPN poll rated Toronto the worst sports city in North America.
Posting on these hockey boards opened my eyes to the harsh reality that TSN is a regional network pretending to be otherwise. On each board there are moderators. Their job is to make sure posters don't get too personal or go too far, unless you're a Leaf fan that is. I have noticed that Toronto posters seem to be able to break the rules and get away with it but when others do the same they don't get their posts through. Some Leaf posters refer to Montreal fans cowards, liars, cheaters and sewer rats. I have seen Leaf posters make fun of French Canadians and call them toilet seats. This is not just the case with Montreal for Toronto fans take the same liberties with other Canadian cities as well. Please understand I have nothing against trash talking as long as all the posters have equal opportunity, the kind of equal opportunity a real national sports network should provide. Over the past months I have been verifying this reality with my own posts. A Toronto poster would hurl an insulting post that would make it through and I'd respond with the same post and it would not. Moderators, living in Toronto and working at TSN are obviously Leaf fans and lack any objectivity. This frustrates posters from coast to coast. When you travel as much as I have you hear this from frustrated fans everywhere.
This type of selective bias reached new heights recently. I mentioned earlier Toronto was recently voted the worst sports city in North America. This poll examined 122 sports franchises in North America, the majority of which are in the United States. The reality that Toronto, a Canadian city was voted worst sports city in North America is embarrassing to all Canadian sports enthusiasts. It is also a national sports story that needs to be reported to all Canadians, that's what a national sports network is supposed to do. TSN did not report the findings of the ESPN poll at all and common sense tells us why. It clearly illustrates where TSN's priorities are and that is to protect Toronto at all cost showing their true colors and a clear regional bias. Canadians from coast to coast refer to them as the Toronto Sports Network for a reason.
Like many Canadians I'm frustrated and I've had enough. I want TSN to know how many Canadians feel like I do. If you send me an e-mail through my web site I will forward all your e-mails to TSN, hopefully that way they'll get the message. Like many Canadians I have no problem with a regional sports network supporting their local teams. Like many Canadians I have a problem when a network holds themselves out to be a national network when everyone knows they're a regional network in disguise. We need a truly National Sports Network in Canada. I look forward to your feedback; things won't change unless we change them.

why Hurricane Irene: 8 Known Dead, 2 Million Without Power

Hurricane Irene marches north, leaving at least 8 people dead and close to 2 million without power in the states it has already hit. Tonight it bore down on millions more from the Delmarva peninsula to the Jersey Shore and the New York metropolitan area.
The deaths reported so far included victims of car accidents and falling tree limbs. One man suffered a heart attack as he boarded up his house in North Carolina. Many more -- the precise numbers change -- have been injured as a result of high winds and tornadoes that have reportedly touched down in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Nearly 10,000 airline flights have been canceled around the country. Philadelphia's airport, among others, completely shut down operations as of 10:30 p.m., and New York's three major airports said they would as well.
Virginia governor Robert McDonnell said the state knew of 152 car crashes and, in some places, more than 16 inches of rainfall. McDonnell said that widespread power outages were expected to remain a problem through the next couple of days, as crews were being pulled off the roads Saturday night because of danger.

Tornadoes were reported in New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. For an hour on Saturday night there was a tornado warning for Center City Philadelphia, though there was no indication a tornado had actually touched down. Tornadoes often form during hurricanes, but are hard to spot or track because of all the violent weather around them.
Delaware's Gov. Jack Markell said he believed a tornado tore through 17 homes near Lewes, Del., and off Rehoboth Beach, the National Weather Service reported a waterspout -- essentiallly, a tornado out at sea. There were no reports of major injuries.
In North Carolina, a 15-year-old girl was killed in an auto accident, said Patty McQuillan of North Carolina's emergency management agency.
In Beaufort, N.C., McQuillan said water rose so high in a woman's house that National Guardsmen and local fire fighters were called into rescue her and her three-month-old baby. The state also reported problems with waste water treatment plants, and minor injuries after several reports of tornadoes.
A Maryland woman was killed when a chimney fell on her house. The unnamed woman was not killed instantly and was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.
Hurricane Irene Heads for New York
More than a million residents and visitors of the Jersey Shore have been evacuated, though a stubborn 600 people, many of them senior citizens, remain in high rise buildings on a barrier island in Atlantic City, according to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Even before the core of the hurricane reached the area Sunday, Christie said winds could reach up to 75 mph at the upper floors of some of the buildings.
Christie spoke bluntly about the need for people to get out of the storm's way.
"We're meeting the first requirement, which is to preserve human life and the best way to preserve human life is not to be on the Jersey Shore," Christie said.
